I’m so sad to read through this thread and realise you lost Finlay. I am so sorry blueelephant. You’ve had a really tough time of it with Toby and his AGY too. It must feel very stressful right now. It is good that he has gained weight however and I hope this little victory gives you some hope despite the continuing vomiting.

So I've just had an update with the vet post 30 days of treatment. While Toby has put on a bit of weight, the issues with vomiting and loose poos are all still very apparent. Vet says there is nothing else we can do. I'm going to go down to one dose of medicine a day and hope he maintains his weight. The vet had hoped we'd see significant improvement and remission of symptoms for a few years. Sometimes birds just don't respond though, and this looks like one of those cases.
It's a case of monitoring his quality of life and weight, and if/when that deteriorates I'll make the call.
I'm just fed up. Fed up for the rubbishness of never being able to actually help make things better and fed up for Barney who doesn't have the active playmate he deserves.

I'm sorry, Blueelephant. This is just miserable news.
I share your sense of frustration and feelings of helplessness, I've experienced it myself. It seems sometimes that there is no way to help our little friends but love, attention and care is never wasted. Not even when there's no expected happy outcome. You're a caring sort so you pay the cost of being hurt but our birbs are worth our devotion and I'm sure on some level, they recognise it.

I'm so sorry that this is not the news we had all hoped for.
I hope that Toby will continue to have a good quality of life for some time yet.

So sorry he did not respond better to the medicine. Does he vomit all foods or just one type, like seeds in which case you could feed him more of the ones he doesn't vomit. However long he lives with you, he'll know he's loved.

tweetiepiesmom it's mainly seeds. Can you link me to your post on sprouting? I'm wondering about giving it a go. That and more effort with chop, although I'd have to freeze it as I can't make it every few days.

I have used the 'Easy Sprout' for my guys sprouts for a couple of years. I do find it easy to use. I don't use the bottom insert for small seeds. I sprout 2 Tbl at a time which takes about 3 days to sprout to the right growth and gives enough sprouts for 3-4 days. After they've sprouted, I transfer them to another container and store in the fridge. You can get the Easy Sprout on Amazon - they may have something else that is similar. I soak my mix overnight and rinse in the morning and evening. This is the mix I use and my vet thinks its good. Buddy loves it but doesn't eat the lentils - he'll eat the lentil tail. www.bestbirdfoodever.com/shop/wheat-free-sprouting-blend/My vet recommended that I not feed sprouted wheat because sometimes wheat encourages yeast growth. www.bestbirdfoodever.com/2022/01/budgies-love-bbfe-sprouts/When I soak, I also add about 8-10 drops of GSE, grapefruit seed extract, to the soak water. If you use it, make sure its the real stuff, not synthetic. I've never had a problem with mold. If you have any questions, just ask.

I'm sorry it's not better news, blueelephantI used to have tubs of chop frozen at a time and it kept fine. Just need to make sure it's not cold when you give it to them cos they're small. Poor Toby. Things suck sometimes.

So sorry, blueelephant. While this is not the news you or Toby wanted, or needed, I do so hope that between your love and the vet’s expertise you’ll find something that will help Toby enjoy a happier life. Hugs and wing wraps from those of us here. Xx

Well patient compliance with the now once a day medicine has reached new lows. This evening, in the dark I went to grab Toby and he wriggled and got free, made it out of the cage and flew around the room. My husband then put him back in the cage, only for us the repeat the whole process for a second time! Honestly. He's spirited at times.

These little guys really hate being caught, don't they! I took Buddy in for his annual exam this week. Normally he gives me a warning nibble but this time, he bit down when I grabbed him to put him in the travel cage. When the vet reached in to pull him out for his exam, she said, 'ouch, he bit me!' The good news is he's healthy, proper weight (25gms ), good pec muscle development and shiny healthy feathers. She approved of his diet and he is a good eater, eating a variety of foodsl

Oh Toby! Be good and take your meds! Stop giving mum and dad the run around! Well patient compliance with the now once a day medicine has reached new lows.
