It seems I only had 2 months relief from an existence of constantly waiting for the next seizure (Perry).
Sadly, Finkleberry has had two, so once again, I'm on edge all the time, watching him & waiting for the next one.
If anyone has any tips or words of wisdom on how to be cheerful under such circumstances, then please share!

You're having such bad luck sweetpea. I'm so sorry. I remember Jerry having seizures and it was very distressing for us

I just wish I could 'switch off' in between times, because it's not like I can do anything whilst waiting for the next one. He may have one in a minute, or maybe not until next month.

That feeling of waiting for "the axe to fall" is a horrible one, Sweetpea. It's so important to actively put it out of your mind - a mantra can help for times when you feel it intruding on your thoughts. Something like, "Nope, not today!" or something similar. I realise that sounds a bit odd (if not unhinged) but it has worked for me in previous bad times where one does not have any control over the situation.

After all, it's going to be upsetting when it actually happens, so why experience stress in the time prior to it happening? Much better to assume it isn't going to happen (even if that feels a bit delusional!) & have some pleasant time in-between the bad times!

That's something I tell myself often, sweetpea - Only go through this once, when it happens ... instead of over & over again, in your mind.

I’m so sorry you’re being put through the wringer yet again sweetpea. I know how you feel - a bit like you’re in a limbo you can’t get your head out of because you just don’t know when the next will come. Going through something a little similar with my migraines atm. It’s very difficult to try and not think of it. But I have learned over the years I can’t live my life in fear or I’d never do anything and I just have to deal with one when it comes. I use positive affirmations at times when I need to - “All is well. I am fine. I am in control.” Also if I find my head in a bad place, what has always worked for me is to recognise I need to find 3 things to be grateful for right at that moment. It could be the view out the window, the feeling of my dog Chester right by my side, anything really. It helps me change my mindset. Thinking of you and Finkle.

It sounds like you are describing mindfulness. I am definitely guilty of spending time in my head instead of in the real world & your 3-things idea sounds grounding. I am sorry you suffer from migraines. I can see how the fear of the next one could take over, but like you say, you can't live your life in fear. 'All is well' is a calming statement. When Perry was going through his seizures, I'd repeatedly say, 'I choose calm, I choose peace' - thinking of him choosing those things, but it hopefully having a knock on effect on us surrounding him.

To my mind, what you have experienced with your birds is not normal, sweetpea. I know you have a great (read that as expensive and multivisited) relationship with your vet so I would be asking some questions such as “why me?” Are the buds coming from the same breeding ground, and maybe there is something there that is not helpful for their health. I can’t imagine your birds’ diet would be lacking, but maybe discuss this with your vet as well. Are you in an area that has some pollution, all or some of the time, so is this being brought on by your surrounding environment? Low levels of calcium, Vit B (12, I think), Vit D - these can be contributors. While seizures can be relatively common in some parrots, and budgies are one of these, I feel that you are experiencing more than your fair share. It may not help reduce your stress levels but I do think that being proactive and being able to rule certain causes out may help you focus on what else you might be able to do to reduce the number of incidences in the future.

One thing to take into consideration with a rehomed bird is also, did the previous owner know they were sick, or had he already displayed signs that he was and they were missed?
Not for Perry and Bezukhov as I think you had them from babies, but with Finkle it could be a consideration. I remember when you got him home for the first time, you asked if I saw a problem with his posture. So you already saw something immediately.

sweetpea I'm so sorry to hear this. Silver had seizures so I fully understand how upsetting it is to witness. I hope you are able to find some answers.

Jerry had seizures, at least 3 over about 6 months, eventually leading to paralysis and had to be pts, and he was only 2 years old. Jerry was from a pet shop that wasn't a great place. He was the 3rd and final budgie of mine that came from a pet shop.
Bertie had some sort of seizure, but he was already nearing the end when that happened so I am not sure that counts. If memory serves, he was about 3 and a half.
I am confident that what George had in 2021 was a stroke as it only happened once. One side of him was paralysed. He recovered but had some personality changes and gradually stopped being able to fly. It was very different from Jerry. George was also a lot older when it happened, about 9.

Yes, I’m a huge advocate of mindfulness. I’ve done a few courses on it too. Really interesting suggestions from Hezz and Marianne Marlow there.

I’m sad to hear about the seizures I've been going through this with my bird Homer having seizures and Honestly the one thing that I found to be very helpful is (Vitamin B complex) And the vet just recently advised me to use (vitamin A) as well just a few drops a month but I still can’t tell if it’s beneficial (new) But I can definitely recommend (vitamin B complex) I give it to him daily and whenever I reduce it the seizures come back and sometimes worse than before I hope this helps It’s awful to see our little buds going through this I’m constantly with him and he’s all I think about Worried all the time and my heart aching all day I wish you and your little bud the best
