OMG I bought a new oven liner this week….it says made with PTFE ? No mention of Teflon. Oh really worried though now………shall I bin it? . In theory, the PTFE lining is safe as long as it is intact (and your oven doesn't heat past the usual 250deg C.) In your shoes, I'd keep the lining but make sure the kitchen door is always shut when cooking (I open the window and the back door too when using my PTFE gear, as I've said.) I wouldn't blame you if you didn't want to risk it, of course.

I'd bin it.
When I google PTFE it says it is toxic to birds.

I'd bin it. When I google PTFE it says it is toxic to birds. Thank you for that, Marianne. I think it's really important we clarify the best safety information. I've seen information about PTFE that conflicts with this but if there's conflicting info, caution wins.

It’s in the bin…..I know I am asking an unknown question, but if that has caused it do you think he will recover? 🙏🏻🙏🏻 I last used the oven on Friday

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PolytetrafluoroethyleneQuote "Other names Fluon, Poly(tetrafluoroethene), Poly(difluoromethylene), Poly(tetrafluoroethylene), teflon" I think it's the marketing people, pulling the wool over our eyes TBH. Trying to make us think that PTFE is not Teflon, but it clearly is.

According to the internet, it's possible, but he'd need to be hospitalised.
I'd phone your vet and tell them what you think he has and tell them you've accidently used teflon, not realising what could happen.

It’s in the bin…..I know I am asking an unknown question, but if that has caused it do you think he will recover? 🙏🏻🙏🏻 I last used the oven on Friday I doubt this is the cause. If you used the pan on Friday, the effect is unlikely to have been delayed this long. With budgies, cause and effect seems to be fairly instant. I don't know whether you can cast your mind back to previous incidents and whether you recall using the pan just before the events occurred?

Again, thank you Marianne for this helpful information. It's opened my eyes for sure.

Was the oven I had on on Friday with the new liner in it………..This is the third bad incident he has had in the last few weeks but I can’t remember if I was using the Teflon pan or not…..But because of the new oven liner I am feeling it has something to do with that…………. He has moved a bit and just had a little fresh basil……..I wonder if I could get to speak to the vet tomorrow she might have a view on it……but they usually want to see you…. I don’t have a problem with that but keeping him there is……( hospital appointments for me ) I just read it’s fatal too……….. I need to stop getting so worked up not good for me….

The official advice about PTFE is that you need to heat it to 280deg C before it gives off its toxic fumes. I'll guess your oven doesn't go past 250deg C so there is a safety margin there. That said, I am uncertain that that margin is enough for me or for any of us here to feel confident enough to risk it going forward. Is Buddy struggling for breath? Chest heaving, tail bobbing? PTFE poisoning leads to water on the lungs which suggests we'd be seeing the usual respiratory-problem symptoms.

Whenever I buy oven liners, I get silicone which doesn't break down. They are more expensive and I don't know if they are available in the UK.

Loz, I opened his cage door and he has been out but just wanted to play a bit on the top of my iPad.. He ate quite a lot of millet. He stayed out for over and hour but definitely not his usual self. I have put him back and he has gone to sleep and he does seem to be breathing a bit heavier and yes tail bobbing as he breathes. It very unlikely I will be able to get a vets appointment tomorrow but I am definitely going to try. I don’t know how they find out what’s wrong without keeping them in and that’s my problem. Oh dear he really does look sorry for himself and I feel guilty.
