I had a hen rolling onto her back , no grip in her feet , 4 days later after having calcium daily directly into her crop she is now back to good health. Wow! So pleased she is doing so well. I have a feeling calcium / D3 deficiency might be possible with Swann - never been much of a cuttlefish fan and I didn't realise oystergrit was 'good' (soluble) grit and didn't offer it until she got sick She then promptly went bonkers over it although hasn't been bothered in the last week or so. So am glad ordered the Calcivet. I have a feeling she'll be super reluctant to try the Feast but we'll see!

Good work, you two! Such great news and please keep us updated on her progress. I hope you have hit on her problems, so you can do all that's possible to change things around for her.

I'll be interested to hear how you get on with the Calcivet- is that the one that goes in the water am I right? Mine don't like to drink when I put stuff in the water so I hope Swanny is more amenable to it, very best wishes to you and Swanny, you have done so well so far!

Yup I got the liquid calcivet to go in her water - I'll let you know what she makes of it. Still got a day or two of ABs though so will finish that first.
Amazingly, the Swann is continuing to get stronger - she is so full of beans and loves coming out of her cage. Her flying is getting really good again though we're still imposing relatively early curfews and popping her back before she can exhaust herself. Better little and often I think.
The stained white feathers above her cere have completely gone - they are pure white again now :-) She had a lovely bath yesterday - she definitely didn't want to get out but I didn't want her to get cold (had already put the heating on so it was nice and warm and she dried really fast).
She is still refusing to investigate seed though grrrrrrrrrrrrr!! I'll keep trying, particularly when she's had her initial I-am-out-of-the-cage-I-need-to-stretch-my-wings fly and is a bit less active! Meantime it's GA-soaked millet and lots of veggies and some fruit. She has, predictably, turned her beak up at the Feast egg food as yet (is it better to feed dry or to moisten it?) - its a delicate balancing act in terms of getting pretty much any nutrition into her versus trying to tackle her stubborn refusal of seed by taking the millet away, at least for periods of time. I have to confess for the moment I am very reluctant to compromise her strength by playing hard-ball. She is also happy to try bits of dry toast (particularly the seedy crusts) and a little natural yoghurt (though limiting that to one little taste - she gets rather cross as a result LOL).
Has anyone got any thoughts on this?
Thanks :-)

Sounds great to me. I agree that it would be hard to deny Swann millet when she isn't eating seed. Anything to keep her strength up.

No great insights are leaping forward out of my brain, but I agree with getting her strength up before playing the meany and removing her millet. After all we thought we had lost her there for a while. Oops, a stray thought getting lonely some AB's taste horrible and can make you feel really quite nauseous, if this is what is happening with Swanny, after the AB's are finished she may feel like taking on seed again. I had Smudge on Baytril (bad vet) once and she ended up sicker than before. I stopped giving her the meds and she perked up and started eating again.

The thing is, millet IS seed. Why ain't she eating her usual seed. It's a mystery to me.

Sick birds seem to go for millet sprays more than seed mixes, maybe millet is easier to husk. I did ask, but they didn't want to share their insights, the little rotters.

I think that the spray millet might be softer than conventional seed. So it's probably easier to dehusk.
Keep her on the spray millet til she's 100% well. Like the others have said, food is food.

Sorry for the late reply Thanks all - I'm trying not to worry about it too much and will keep her on the millet for now. It's been a bit non-stop here. She's still doing well - still in the little cage and steady progress on the activity levels - her flying is back to normal now I think Our boiler was condemned by British Gas yesterday as the flue isn't completely flush with the seal. It was a routine annual service and bam, a bombshell! Agh. So no heating or hot water for the moment, thank goodness it's not really cold. More significantly it does make me wonder whether Swann might have been affected by fumes - how horrendous is that? :-( :-( British Gas coming back tomorrow morning, hopefully will be fixed then. Unfortunately she's started a moult. Really hope it's not a bad one. Particularly as the heating is off so we only have a little fan heater to periodically warm up the place (but obviously can't use it when we're out). And then this weekend we're meant to be going to do various wedding related things including meeting the caterers and that sort of business at my parents. By car its about 2.5 hours but we're going to have to go by train. I am honestly not sure what to do with the Swann - we have friends who will mind her, I know they would, they've done so before. It's just that now she is more complicated to look after and if anything was to happen to her when we were away I would feel so awful in case her babysitter blamed themselves. With her having been so sick, then on top of that her starting a moult, I think the stress of a train journey is a pretty bloody bad idea even with her being a pretty seasoned traveller. It would be one change and a total travel time by train of 3 hours, then another half an hour in a car at the other end. Then the same in reverse on Sunday. ^ Gosh, writing that out I realise how stupid I am / was to be even considering it

Oh, poor you! If Swanny is happy with your friends and they are reliable with it, She really has to stay home, doesn't she? They can keep doing all the same things for her that you are doing and it is only the weekend. Maybe once the boiler is fixed she will bounce back like a rubber ball!
