I have had 2 babies dissapear now from the nests (colong breeding) at about 10 days old. They were rung and from different nests which both contained more babies. They have dissapered with no signs of blood so cant have been eaten, no ring left and all the other chicks in the nest fine. There is no sign on the floor or anywere else. Has anyone else ever had it happen to them as its stumping me out at the moment

I thought that maybe a mouse had taken them but surely a 10 day old chick would to too hard to carry off with no signs and surely it would have taken the smaller chick?? x

I would keep 24 hour watch on your aviary especially overnight, is there no signs of mice activity? remember they can get through the smallest of gaps!! I hope you find out where these poor chicks are going before they all go!

My guess would be a rat. They will be back, you need to find where they are getting in, remember they have flexible rib cages and can get in through a couple of cm gap. Go over the aviary with a fine tooth comb. Even if they stop taking the babies they will contaminate the food and pass on disease instead, horrible horrible things.

i still think some one is niking them .. a mouse can get in through the wire ......but cant get the chicks through ...and theres no blood ........ so how is it a mouse or rat ...they wouldnt stay to clean up .... but yes look for holes just in case ....

my outside flight leads to the inside flight lips and nest boxes and the hatch to that is open all day and only gets locked up of a night so they could get in but i thought there would at least be a sign of them being there like disturbed shavings, blood, signs of a mothers struggle?? But also if someone was nicking them wouldnt they take the lot and not just one or two?
