I took Smudge to the vet on Wednesday, a check up regarding her preening gland growth. The thing has grown a little since I first discovered it about six months ago. I really wonder whether she is accessing any oil from the gland at all, even though she religiously goes through the motions, as she doesn't repel water the way the others do, and in hindsight, probably never has. She still looks in good condition, but her feathers feel ever so slightly different to that of the other two, and she is still the same mentally and physically. We are waiting for any feed-back we can get from a bird specialist that my vet liaises with, when odd problems arise. I have been telling Smudge for her whole three years that she is odd and a problem. Here she is, about a week ago: Good heavens!!!! I don't know how I got that photo! Smudge on a swing!!!! Maybe she was sick that day!

Her feathers still look okay in the photo.
I wonder if that Bee Propolis ointment would be of use on her gland?

Got the phone call late yesterday. I am to try hot and cold compresses for the next week while I consider my (our) options. I got started with the compresses this morning (poor girl ) to discover the thing is larger than I thought. While I couldn't squeeze any junk out, I did find some dry yellow stuff on the top side of the "cauliflower" ......... makes me wonder if the gland is working, but she can't get to it ...... But the bad news is that it is going to have to be lanced or removed, both are going to require anaesthetics (another hit to the back pocket) but more likely removed. So surgery, antibiotics, an elizabethan collar, and a very unhappy Smudge in the near future. Poor little darling.

Sending Smudgy all positive vibes and head scratches from UK x

Sorry she hasn't gotten better by herself. Maybe the compresses will help some.

On a lighter note, is that Sparky's bottom I see in the Smudge pic?

On a lighter note, is that Sparky's bottom I see in the Smudge pic? Yep! Sparky's little green butt in the air ............ that piece of grass over there just has to be the best bit ......... I think I can reach it ....... I worry that the "gentle" massage is hurting Smudge a little. There are times the ducky quacks become a tad more dramatic. Tonight I got a couple of spots of red on the cotton ball ...... don't know if there was any other liquid or just a blood spot ......... Back to Sam's comment about her reacting better when I handle her ........ the odd think is it is almost as though she knows. When things have to happen, she doesn't hold a grudge and seems to know that after when she is all wet it is best to stick with me - she really can't fly when she is only a little wet! And little Miss Nipper ....... I never would have believed that I could put her through all this drama and not once has she given me a proper bite! 12 months of conditioning from a baby certainly has paid off. She is great. Love her to bits.
