Hi everyone Well I'm probably panicking over nothing (I hope so!) but I'd be grateful if you could have a look at these vids and see if you think this is normal? Rocky has been just a little quieter than normal since yesterday evening, sleeping a little more than normal and had some slightly yellowie wet poops (although that's a bit better this evening, paler and drier) Has been no change in his diet. Also he's been making this funny little squeaky noise that's not normal for him - it's not all the time but it's almost like a sore throat or some sort of blockage. He has sneezed very occasionally too. It seems respiratory if anything, I know little about budgie diseases but after a little research thought maybe it might be air sac mites? I haven't put any ivermection on him since I've had him and I don't know if the breeder did either. He hasn't replied to any contact since I got Rocky so I don't think there's any point in trying to get hold of him. Here's some vids and a couple of pics His mucky bum! i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff193/frasernathan/null_zps47ef990d.jpgi241.photobucket.com/albums/ff193/frasernathan/null_zpsf37a2ec3.jpgI'm keeping a close eye on him for now but wasn't sure whether this needs a trip to the vets or whether I'm being a bit paranoid...

Have you located a good avian vet near you?

Closest one is about 40miles away as far as I know. I took him there when he hurt his wing and they seemed very good. Not sure they're open tomorrow but will take him Monday if needs to go.
Keeping a close eye on him in the meantime. He's pretty bright in himself though. Hubby thinks I worry too much but something just seems a little off...

Doesn't seem obviously unwell too me but you know if his behaviour is different. Advice I was given at first sign of illness is to give extra heat - do you have a lamp which gives heat? I made a little tent for Woody so heat was kept in cage. Hope everything turns out well. It is horrible when you're worried about the buds.

I don't have a lamp but he's in a petty snug corner, I've covered him with an extra layer tonight to be safe. He went to bed fine after a little chat so will see what he's like tomorrow morning

How about a hot water bottle?? These are good too if you want to give him some extra warmth. Just put a cloth and/or paper over it so he doesn't burn his feet. I don't know what to make of the squeak either - I can hear it on the vids. But if you have ivermectin it isn't going to hurt to give him a dose - it needs to go on his chest, not the back of his neck, for airsac mites. Does he have an iodine block? Iodine deficiency can (apparently) cause a squeak too ....... adding iodine to his water would sort this out quite quickly, if this is his problem. You would need an iodine tincture 25mg/ml and add three drops to 100mls of water. Give it to him for a few days running and take note of any improvement.

You are not being paranoid, and you will know if things are off. Remember, we are not seeing your bird as you are. Rocky shouldn't be squeaking like that and mucky bums are not a good sign. Yes, sometimes it's nothing and things quickly come right, but trust your eyes and ears and what you know about the behaviour of your own bird.

Thanks guys, the support is much appreciated Hezz He does have an iodine block and he does use it but not loads. I was thinking it wouldn't hurt to ivermectin him anyway, would you think iodine or ivermectin would be best first? x

Hi Tracy, I couldn't see a tail bob, which I think I'd have expected to see if it was air sac mites, as he'd have been struggling a bit to breathe. However, Ivermectin won't hurt to rule it out. If you are using it as a treatment for a suspected problem rather than as a preventative, you need to apply more than one dose- once a week for two or three weeks I think(can't remember exactly) so read the leaflet well and double check with members... Yellow poop- too much millet or veg in one go maybe? One of my birds is perfectly healthy but does lighter poop if they pig out on millet. Do as others have said and keep him warm, check he's eating and give him just seed and water today. It could be something or not, his behaviour is the best indication of how he is, and you know him best. If you're worried take him back to the vet to set your mind at rest. Other halfs need to understand that we worry, that's just how us girls are!! I'm wondering whether something new may have frightened him - a slamming door by mistake, something like that? Sometimes that's all it is to make them a bit quiet for a while. BUT like I said- you know him and follow your instinct as to whether he is unwell or not....I hope he is back to his normal self today x

I keep thinking of things to add!! :re the sneezing- you don't have any candles, or sprayed anything? Both of these are a no no for birds... Any new toys that may have irritated him, or building dust, work going on outside with your window open, neighbours barbecue smoke, anything like that? I hadn't noticed that you'd put his poops were wet too. That is something to watch very closely- if they continue to get drier again it may just be a big gulp of water, but you must be vigilant (I know you are).

Thanks Sarah. Hasn't really been much change today, no worse but still a little quiet and still little pale yellow poops overnight and mucky bum. And still squeaking. Don't think it needs an emergency visit today but we'll def be going to the vets tomorrow if poops not clearing up. Luckily I have a day off tomorrow, other plans will just have to go on hold! I'm going in for a small hip op on 21st so I need to get this under control before then if poss, will be on crutches for 4weeks so hubby may have to step in for a while if necessary! In the end he'll always listen to me for any pet stuff so if Rocky needs to go to vets will be no argument I did try to pm Barrie to see if he might have seen something like the squeak before but I just keep getting a 'you can't post more than once in 15 seconds' message and it won't send...

Hi Sarah. I stopped his veg and millet yesterday. Since I read up on here re sprays and stuff before i got him all air freshners, sprays etc are gone so has been none of that. I hadn't changed anything in his food previously, it really is very strange. He does try to chew absolutely anything so maybe he's managed to eat something he so maybe he's eaten something he shouldn't have but I have no idea what he could have got hold of. I think he's moulting now so maybe that's causing it? This sounds really stupid but might he have eaten a feather???
