Good luck. Maybe also write things down as easy to not remember/take it in, when upset. Or can anyone go with you? I will probably forget how to write! A good point though - I will make sure I have pen & paper.

Hello all. I thought I would give an update on Thomas. In short, there has been no change. Since I last reported ( Previous thread "Resistant to antibiotics") he has had two more lots of medication, neither making any difference. In fact, his breathing has gradually become more laboured. At times, he looks very lethargic but then briefly livens up again. He is still eating & still enjoys his vegetables. His poops are still a dreadful colour. The vet is now focusing on his vent area that is still swollen. On Friday morning, we are booked in for an x-ray to try & determine what the swelling is. To say I am worried is an understatement. I am sorry to know this Is your vet an avian vet? He's an exotic vet, bb - his special area is birds & reptiles. I have a fair amount of confidence in him though, as I know he used to regularly consult with the avian vet (now retired).

Thomas is already in the travel cage. As it is an early appt tomorrow I thought it would be easier to have him sleep overnight in the travel cage so that in the morning I can just bundle him up & go.
He's been very up & down today. At times looking very lethargic & sorry for himself but then other times quite alert & having a few good chats with Cagney (aka Mr Popular).

Thanks for the good wishes everyone. We are back home. It was less than an hour, door-to-door. Mr Vet will ring later with the result. He said that whilst Thomas was out, he had another feel of the swollen area & suspects it may go further back. I'm not sure what that could indicate but hopefully he will know more later. He also took a blood sample. I wish I got such a noisy welcome back as Thomas did. He tucked into some seed as soon as I returned the pot & is now preening. I will leave him in the travel cage for now.

I have just spoken to Mr Vet. He said the swelling is most probably due to an enlarged fatty liver. It doesn't look (or feel) like a tumour/lump. It looked too dense on the x-ray to just be fluid. He assumes this is genetic as I don't feed sweet-type foods. I have only had Thomas since April & as he is a re-home, originally from a pet shop then his history is not 100% certain, but it is thought he was about 4 months old when I got him, so that means he's not even a year old. He is going to get a supplement to put in food to "mobilise" the liver (or words to that affect!) I forgot to ask how that would affect his breathing... The original infection that he had was secondary. So, an answer, of sorts...

I'm sorry to hear that Thomas has a fatty liver, this is what Charlie had too. I think that if his liver is that enlarged then it might possibly be impacting on other organs and that is why he can't breathe properly.
Charlie also had breathing difficulty at then end.
I hope you're able to control this somehow. xx
