Dandelion tea would definitely be of help ...... certainly can't be of any harm, that is for sure! i think any of these herbal/holistic approaches are long term, but well worth giving a try. But best to ask the vet about them as he/she may have a very different approach to Thomas's health.

An update. I popped into the vets on the way home today. Mr Vet was consulting but the assistant suggested I wait until he was free so she could get the medication update from him. As it happens, he called me into the room (even though someone else was waiting with a booked appt!) for a chat. He said he is having difficulty getting hold of the medication (L-Carnitine) & even getting the human version. He resorted to Holland & Barrett! He said they don't have it locally but he was going into London tomorrow & will pop into a H&B there. He said if he still had no luck there was Chinatown (!) & after that, he's going to Bangkok in a couple of weeks & they will definitely have it there! (I hope he doesn't charge me for air miles!) He said in the meantime I could put Thomas on milk thistle & I was quite chuffed to say he was already on it. He did say to double the dosage though. He also said to give him "orange fruit" which I thought was a bit odd but I will certainly look into it. Apparently Harrison's do a food with fruit but I can't find that on the internet so I wonder if he maybe meant Lafeber stuff.... He also showed me the x-ray & pulled out a reference book with a better picture of the enlarged/fatty liver. I wasn't prepared with my list of questions (didn't ask about exercise, given his breathing difficulties, etc.) but I left feeling like he is trying his best. In the meantime, Thomas is much the same. I try to give him inside-cage time without Phineas & also out-of-cage time without Phineas! Phinny can be a bit demanding & boisterous. I don't want to completely separate them as I feel he does have some comfort having Phinny there - it's just the "all the time" thing which can be a bit wearing I think, even for someone in good health.

I would have thought exercise would have been a good thing, as long as Thomas isn't doing the marathon.

It sounds as though your vet is pulling out all the stops for you, Sweetpea. So how much milk thistle did he recommend you give Thomas? I would like to know what he thinks is a good amount for a fatty-liver budgie. My fear is that Smudge is going down this road, regardless of all I do to prevent it. Good luck with this ..... I think it's brilliant that your vet is putting in this amount of effort for you. You've got a good one there.

I would have thought exercise would have been a good thing, as long as Thomas isn't doing the marathon. I have certainly noticed that since he has been unwell, when he comes out he flies to get to the other cage & then basically stays there. Before, he was chasing Cagney all over the place.

I originally got the milk thistle for my girls as they were overweight. I tried all I could to help them lose weight, but, I suspect like your Smudge, they were a bit stubborn.

Thanks for that, sweetpea. Do the others get any of the water, or is that strictly Thomas's? Stubborn and hens ...... the two seem to go together. I keep telling the other two not to feed her. They don't listen either.

I might give C & B a rest from it but for Thomas (& Phineas) they will have it indefinitely. Those stubborn hens! I remember when I used to take my girls' seed pots out (they had veg available) & they would just sit where the pot should be, waiting for its return, & in Atilla's case, throw in a tantrum or two.

Mine have started "bombing" any of the family if they venture into the living area and they think they should have their seed - like you, mine still have something to eat, in their case the fresh grass. But they have everyone on side now ..... so of course whoever gets bombed, or head sat on, comes to me and says the birds want their seed!
