Yes his tail is very similar to Titch's and he does hold out his wings like that a lot, but it is hot here. Do you think its FM?

Titch falls a lot too. We have created a kind of system where he can get anywhere he needs to without flying. Branches leading to the food, water, cuttle bone etc. And we have a blanket under the newspaper on the floor so when he falls he has a soft landing. There really is nothing more you can do. He will cope and as he gets older he will get used to not flying and learn to scramble wherever he wants to go. They are often called runners as they can run very fast and climb up the side of the aviary really easily.

www.auspigeonco.com.au/Articles/french_moult.htmlSecond paragraph^ When we got him he also had a bit of blood on his flight feathers ;-/ Thanks for all your help starlingqueen I really really appreciate it Just one more question, what can I do to help him. I mean its a problem if he cant get up off the bottom of the aviary- especially when im at school or away on holidays. Should he be taken out of the aviary and become a cage bird so I can keep an eye on him all the time?

Can he get to the wire on the side of the aviary? If he can he will learn to scramble up the side. If not then could you provide a branch from the floor up to the top branches of the aviary so he can use it to climb up? Then provide a runway of branches so he can get around. You could keep him in a cage but I think he would be happier if he could live with the other birds. They seem to have very happy lives and adapt very well. I would keep an eye on him and see how he copes, if you feel he's not coping then move him into a cage, but Titch loves being part of the gang.

It's only infectious in the nest box, he would have got it as a chick. Many breeders keep a FM bird as they believe the birds in contact with them develop immunity to the virus.

Yes it said that many get infected but don't develop the disease. But it also said that few do develop the disease (even adult ones)

There is no evidence to prove the transmission between older birds. I have had Titch for 2 years and none of my other birds have been affected. There is a breeder on this forum who breeds from a FM bird. Can't remember who it is, possibly Corie. Here's another link for you to read. www.birds-online.de/gesundheit/gesgefieder/franzmauser_en.htm

Ok so does that mean I have to decide whats best for him and the flock? Im leaning towards separating him ONLY because I really really don't want it passed on- even if its only as a gene and I don't want him to fall and hurt himself as it is about 1.2-1.3 meter drop onto pavement if he falls. But I also don't want him to be lonely. If he has to become an inside bird the main idea so he wont be lonely is to hand tame him.
My mum said to take him back to the place we got him from because they shouldn't sell unhealthy birds but I said no to that straight away. He is part of the family now whether or not he is normal. And I wont palm him off to someone else because he is different. People in the community are different and have disabilities, and I see Mawson as one of those people just in a flock on budgies instead.

I do feel sorry for you and poor little Mawson, Nicola. While I had not had any experience with FM either, your account of things regarding him seem very similar to others' who have gone through this. I knew you wouldn't take him back and love the way you clarify this. Did you tell your Mum the same thing? She should be proud of you. You can get some quite long ladders for birds in pet shops and these may help with his falling, but it isn't going to help if he injures himself while doing so. Does he fall, or does her flutter down? If he flutters down without crashing, then I think he will be fine in the aviary, but if he can't control his descent at all, he may be better in the house with you. You would end up with a most adorable, loving little companion.

Thankyou Hezz, but mum doesn't see budgies the same way I do unfortunately. I don't think she sees them as important as they are to me. Although I wish his descent was nice, from what I have seen he cant control anything when he falls. He just plummets and gets himself into a sticky situation when I'm not there to help him. I agree that the house would be the safest option for him but mum isn't on side yet. Dad is though- that's a start
