Mum isn't like 'OMG yes! Great idea'. But she didn't say no and her 1 rule was he wasn't to live inside. So she tolerating this idea. Dad is all for it and we will most likely be going to buy a cage for him when he gets back. Ideally I would love a Hagen cage but that might push mum a little too far unless we can find a big bargain online... We shall see

You will need a good, properly made, sturdy cage for outside, I think. And snake proof! Don't forget that. After all, you don't want an accident if the cat or dog show interest. Good luck with this scenario, Nicola. At least you wore Mum down somewhat. Life ....... it's all about compromise.

Our dog won't care.... She's a cavalier King Charles....... Her life revolves around eating and sleeping The cat doesn't annoy the budgies anyway and the cage would be on a table more than 1 meter high so snakes shouldn't be a problem. We haven't had any so far

Believe me, snakes are going to be a problem. And a metre off the ground is not going to faze a tree snake, or carpet snake ....... and these do start out small. My cage has gaps that are barely more than a centimetre wide, and it isn't considered snake proof. I have been lucky, touch wood, but know others with the same cage who haven't. But good to know the cat isn't a problem. I use my dog, a lab-mutt, to guard the buds sometimes when they are out in the sun! If I have to duck inside for something.

Well Sophie would probably fall asleep on the job But he would be in seeing view even from inside and definitely when we are outside eating dinner he would be right there. Mum thinks we should try change the aviary first to suit him but like we said, it's useless if he falls and hurts himself. And now-days he spends basically all him Tim sitting on the water container near the food so he doesn't have to move . That isn't much of a life at the moment. He couldn't fly 10-15 cm across yesterday to get to a branch. I think giving him a nice new home is the best option And plus I will rest much easier at school knowing he isn't on the bottom of the aviary or possibly hurt all day

Precisely One little bud that is very calm I may add seeing as he can't fly around the cage knocking seed dishes over all the time

Keep at it (her) Nicola. I think your idea is the best you have available so far. I agree, that it would be worrisome for you to have him in the aviary. You really would need to pad the concrete somehow to make it a soft landing and unless you use something like sand or straw it wouldn't be easy to do, plus the other alternatives still will need to be replaced rather frequently (more expense). The poor little guy is not going to stop trying to fly any time soon, so you must save him from himself. With time he may realize he can't and stop trying but until he does it is up to you to keep him safe.

He has kind of realised he can't fly as he does those little bobs like he's going to take off but then doesn't. He uses the mesh. But he still fell somehow in a matter of minutes a couple of days ago and I don't know how. I don't know if I'm doing the right thing either. My main concern is that when I'm not here he could fall and not get back up. I don't want to have to worry about him all day at school wondering if he's up with the others. But mum thinks that what I'm doing is is silly when I explain he will be safer. She isn't saying no she's just trying to convince me. Like i know that lots of French moult budgies are ok in an aviary but to be honest a lot of the time I won't be there to help if needed. But my worry if I separate him is that he'll be lonely. Will me? Even if he can hear the others?

Forgot to add that if I know he won't be lonely, my decision is made. But if he will I'm 50/50. I want him to have the best life possible but climbing the mesh like a monkey isn't a budgie life. He at least deserves to be able to hop from branch to branch and use at least a little of his bird instincts but I also want him to be happy. Can u see my problem? I keep thinking it over in my head what will be best for him but I just don't know. He would be alone a lot of the day because of school as u know but does that over ride him possibly spending that time on the bottom oft he aviary?

He will learn to break his fall by flapping as he descends, and probably has already as he hasn't injured himself so far. And he will get stronger and better at hopping around as he gets older, he is only a baby still and not used to anything yet, he's still learning. Titch, my FM, is the most outgoing and friendly of all my buds. He is the first to welcome new birds and everyone loves him, they all feed him and chat with him. When he falls they all look down to see if he's OK, it's really sweet, and he is back up in no time at all, moves much faster than the others. I personally think it would be a shame to isolate him because of his disability. He just needs time to settle and get used to his life, a few ladders/branches placed strategically and he will be fine. You will be amazed at how well he copes and enjoys life with company.

starlingqueen has some made some valid points there, I feel. If you do decide to leave him in the aviary, nicola, as a short-term fix while Mawson is still realizing he can't fly, to save you worrying, and him from possible injury, how about cardboard on the bottom of the aviary? If you can get some empty boxes from somewhere (I work in a sports store, and we throw out a truck load of flattened cardboard every day) and flatten them, put these on the floor of the aviary, this would give him a little bit of bounce if he does fall - not splat onto unforgiving concrete, and you could simply recycle when it becomes too soiled. You could put it down in several layers at first, if you didn't think one was enough. The cardboard has some give to it; concrete has none.

Good point starling queen and Hezz. After all this I probably will leave him with the others only because I can't take away his happiness and friends. I can't. I'm thinking about a big ladder and a play gym. It sounds weird but my idea is that if he can't get back up he could decide to perch on the play gym so he's not on the floor. I will have to get the gym a bit off the ground but this is just a rough idea

Others will be able to give you some good tips on ways to make his life easier, but making sure he has perches or ladders running from one level to the next would be the main thing, and that he can easily access food and water. How are the other birds with him? Just keep an eye out for any of the others picking on him.
