Great to have Dad on your side. Can the pair of you wear Mum down? I hope so.

I hope so too, although Dad is away until the 29th as he is taking his dad and mum up to see dads sister (my aunt) in Ballina as they aren't able to travel by themselves. Ive been talking to Dad though and he is going to ring tonight so he can hopefully convince mum. I think mums just worried about mess. But that's where my marvellous idea of a hagen vision cage comes in

Or even one of those "silly" cage skirts?

Good idea! They may also do the trick. But in all seriousness there isn't many more options-he cant stay in there as he could seriously hurt himself and there is no way in the world hes going back to the pet shop. In my mind that leaves only one option: to have him inside

I have to come up with a plan B. Mum has said (or yelled) no birds in the house and I don't know what to do. What can I do to help him?!

Oh, sweetie! I don't know what to say. Are you able to hang fire until Dad gets home? It is too easy for Mum to say no now, much harder with Dad by your side. I can only suggest do your research ....... look at all the options and plan your answers, pro and cons. Mum's biggest cons are going to be mess and more work for her. So work out your responses to these, find some positives to address as well, you know the things mothers like to hear ....... make you more responsible, tidy your room, won't interfere with your homework, ............ I can't think of others at the moment. At least he is not like a dog, and need to be exercised. I can only offer you the best of luck with this, Nicola. I am so sorry you are in this position.

Thanks Hezz. But dad rang and tried to convince her but she told him no and everytime I try to explain how it could work she starts saying no before I have finished. I think mum would rather another dog or cat

Ohhh Nicola im so sorry your in this position with Mawson and your mum . I do think it is FM, it is not contagious. However Beak and Feather Disease is and this also affects the way the nails and beak grow, very long. This is where the two conditions get confused. Hopefully it is not Beak and Feather Disease, i don't think so, and the only way to know this is with a blood test. The chances of the others developing it is quite low. My Jo has lived in the aviary for years and has managed very well, just make sure you put lots of branches from floor to wire level so that he can get back up. I adapted my aviary by bringing the floor levels up but it was easy to do, i don't think you could do that in yours. It is amazing how they get about .

Thanks skysmum Now that you mention it his claws are incredibly long and his beak is a bit too. What does that mean? Is it possible he has both?

They are both different strains of the same virus. It looks to me that Mawson has a mild case of FM like my Jo and SQ's bud, it seems to affect the main flight feathers but not the others. In a severe case all the feathers are affected. Just make things in the aviary as easy as possible for him making sure he can reach the food and water etc, maybe even make some little platforms for him to sit on, i know your good at all this sort of thing . Can i just say, when my girls were growing up at home we had every pet under the sun at some point or other, but all the girls ever wanted was a cat, now that's the one thing i couldn't give them because im very allergic to them, so i told them that when they got older and left home they could have as many cats as they wanted. Sure enough the first thing they both did when they left home was to go and get a cat, not one, not two but three cats each and they still have two each, one of them is 17 this year . My point is, when you have a place of your own i know exactly what your going to do .

Trust me- I have been planning that for quite a while now. I'm going to make a bird room that has breeding cabinets and an inside aviary and an outside aviary so they can fly between the 2. Those birds will be the breeding ones. And of course inside I will have a number on tame little friends as well So it isn't possible to have both? His nails are twice the size of the others

And i would love to come for a visit, sounds wonderful . Its a confusing virus they are similar but not the same, i don't think they can carry both. If his nails are very long as is his beak it could be beak and feather. Im more familiar with FM myself but there are some great articles on the web about it all. Tbh i think some of it remains a mystery even to the experts.

Haha yes you could come for a visit to Australia, it would be a nice or not so nice climate change depending on the season His nails are extremely long- like very very long. His beak is but not that much. I'm considering separating him only because I don't want to risk the others- just I case. We'll have to see how everything goes

Ok I think I'm getting somewhere with mum. Although she doesn't want him inside, we have a table/ cabinet thing outside out glass door next to the family room where I think he would be happy by himself there is an iPod Dock/ stereo on the table so it won't be silent and I can even put ion budgie calls and sounds if he's feeling lonely and the others are quiet as he would be able to still here them from there. He will also be able to here the tv inside and will get plenty of sun and shade during the day. We also have the dining table and BBQ out in that area where he would have heaps of company for family events. What do you think?

That is sounding much more positive, Nicola. And mum is happy with this, is she? And ....... naughty, devious mind that I have ....... I can see Mawson gradually winning his way inside the door ..... maybe once ..... maybe whoops, twice ...... until mum doesn't even realize Mawson has become a permanent indoor resident. It could take twelve months or more - don't push it - but she may come to love his company just as much as you do. I hope so, anyway. I hope this is the solution you can both live with. Poor little birdie ..... he is a lucky one though, to have you in his corner.
