Mawson

I am pleased to say that Mawson, the new addition to the flock, has settled in well with the others and is a happy little baby budgie Although he is enjoying himself I have been worrying that there is something wrong with his flying and my suspicions are even stronger after today. When we first got him he wasn't too good with his flying. He fell down to the bottom of the aviary 2 times in a rough space of 5 minutes and found it quite difficult to fly 40cm or so upwards to get back on the mesh. I ended up having to pick him up and put him back on a perch. I assumed this was because he was young and was just finding his bearings around the aviary. However, as he has settled in that must not be the cause now. In the 42 degree Celsius heat of Wagga Wagga, the budgies need spraying and cooling down regularly and so today I did just that. I left them for about 2 minutes to fill up their water container and when I got back he was on the ground again. He wasn't hurt but after multiple attempts he still couldn't fly that 40cm needed. Everytime he tried he got about 15 cm off the ground before he fell again and I once again had to pick him up so he could get back to the others Flying up and down is the hardest for him and even flying across he does somewhat clumsily. Seeing as he has the most trouble flying up which I'm guessing requires the most muscle, is it possible that something IS wrong with his wing muscles? Although he is young, his cere is already blue and I have had many budgies younger than him who have had no trouble flying in the aviary. Does anyone have any ideas or ways to help him? Or solutions or suspicions as to what is going on? Thanks in advance

oh shame.. how old is he? when I first got Bailey, he was 8 weeks old. He struggled to fly and fell a lot too.. some of them it seems, need to learn 'how' to fly, whereas I always assumed they just flapped their wings and that was that. He couldnt find his way back to anything, even if my had was in front of him.
Others on here will know about muscle and maybe it is just that the muscle in his case does just need building up?

That's alright Sarah. I'm sure someone else will come along with some ideas I'm hoping it's just a case of building up wing muscles as ffiscool said but he doesn't seem young enough for that to be a problem

I have 2 birds that have trouble flying. One has been cage bound all her life so never had the chance to use her wings. The other has French Moult. Can you post some pictures of Mawson so we can at least rule out FM.

Yep sure. I will get some shortly His tail hasn't got that big long feather that the others do but I assumed that it had just fallen out as Daisy's had a few weeks back but grew back fine. I'll get some pics to help explain it

I'll be honest, when I first saw the pictures I did wonder if he had French moult but couldn't see very well so didn't say anything. Some good clear pictures would be good.

Thank you for helping everyone! I haven't had any experience with FM before so some experienced advice is greatly appreciated Heres the pics: He has patches like this where his feathers aren't smooth^v To my knowledge all his wing feathers are there but I also looked at Romeos wing feathers and Mawsons are much rougher and not pristine and smooth like they should be. He also has 1-2 flight feathers that are shorter than usual however the bar is in the way in this pic^. EDIT: actually you can see a long flight feather followed by a short one and then a long one again.^ What do you think? FM?

He does look like my FM bird. His tail or lack of it is very much like Titch. Is he very small compared to the others. I always think my FM is like a little butterfly when he tries to fly. No flapping sound like the others, just a delicate little flutter as he floats down to the floor.

Mawsons flying isn't really like that although yesterday he was when he could only fly 15cm up before fluttering down He manages to fly across ways but it is very messy and you can see that it is hard for him. When he lands on a perch he also seems to lean forward a bit as well until he balances properly. Is this FM?

Does he fly or sort of hop across? Titch can jump from quite a distance. Is he very small?

He is quite small yes, and when I spray them to cool them down his feathers get wet much quicker like his feathers are thinner or he doesn't have as many which even to me sounds like FM (?) For short distances that he can hop he does, but when he tries to fly 30cm ACROSS or so its very messy and sometimes when hes feeling brave he tries too hard and falls, which only very scarcely can he manage to get up himself again ;-/
If he is FM moult what do I do? He keeps falling in the aviary ;-/
