Recent research has shown that stopping a course of antibiotics part way through doesn't increase the likelihood of antibiotic resistance developing. Shorter courses of antibiotics are equally effective for most infections and less likely to cause antibiotic resistance because they reduce the exposure of bacteria to antibiotics, which reduces the speed by which resistant populations develop. The WHO have changed their prescribing guidelines in line with this, with a move toward 3 to 5 day courses rather than 7 to 10 days. That is interesting, criswell. You go away for a couple of days and the neighbourhood changes. The WHO site is giving me a page not found so I can’t access that info. The other site is really just a tease; pity the references weren’t direct links. It doesn’t sound as though it has been universally accepted as yet, so I suppose time will tell.

Patch has had his final Baytril and we are done with dosing for now. Huge sigh.
The new scales arrived today (replacing the ones that broke at the worst possible time) and most of the flock has been weighed. Patch shows a substantial loss, from 38g to 33g in eight days. If I attribute 1g of that to differing scale accuracy, that's still four grams and that's on the back of two further grams lost over the past three weeks.
I'm not panicked but I am concerned. At the moment I am attributing the loss to stress over the administration of meds, which I think is reasonable, so I will watch the next week or so with great interest and a little trepidation.
He's feeding his little face now and Eeyore, mercifully, is letting him. For the most part. I reached for the squirter a short while ago but didn't need to show it to Eeyore - things settled down.

My vet told me that weight change of 10% or more is cause to pay attention to what's going on. My two little guys usually weigh close to 30grams each. Based on their weight, my vet calculated they need around 60 calories each every day. I'm not sure how to calculate the calories in the foods that I give then. A whole bag a spinach leaves is about 120 calories, so 1 leaf might be 1 calorie? Good luck figuring that out! Just make sure he's eating and getting plenty of what he likes.

I'll be watching Patch's weight very carefully. Hopefully my scales won't fail again and I can get consistent values.
I weighed Squeak at lunchtime, she was 38g. When she sat on the scales again a few hours later, she was 40g! She really does like her food but over a gram in an afternoon? Great work.

It's interesing that your link works Marianne Marlow but mine doesn't. I think it did work when I first posted it loz I'm glad Patch has had his last dose of baytrill. Randolph Carter lost weight each time he had antibiotics and put it on quite quickly again afterwards. The last time he had them his weight had been stable until he started taking them. It stabilised the day after he stopped and then started increasing. I do hope Patch starts to put weight on. Hezz the second like is an review article in a peer reviewed Journal with lots of references to actual studies, but it's difficult to find journal articles that are free to view. I'll see what I can find.

I noticed, when hovering over the link with my cursor that there are some characters at the end, so I removed them and re-posted it. Patch has had a fairly quiet day, criswell. He has been out and about, foraging, but fairly subdued. I didn't get a chance to weigh him today so I will have to make every effort tomorrow. It's likely my imagination but I've had the impression, a couple of times today, that Patch's breathing has been less obviously heavy and his tail-bob less pronounced. Wishful thinking I'm sure but I will keep observing. Thank you for asking

Fingers crossed that his breathing is less heavy and you're not imagining it.

He looks quite bright there and he had no trouble flying himself back home again. It's so hard to tell with breathing. If I was worried about the breathing of one I'd compare it to the others, but then they'd all start breathing faster because I'd made them nervous. He might be a bit on edge for a couple of days because he's still worried that you are going to catch him any minute for some more horrible medicine.
