So finally the days come after what seemed like forever, chick 1 has arrived. Joey usually goes in the nest box for 5-10 mins, today when I noticed it hatched he was in there a good hour, proud father I reckon. also is it normal for the chicks to have slight feathers on there back when hatched? cant see if the lil buds been fed as this was the only chance to see him/her.

I think those are loose feathers from one of the chicks parents

They dont look like proper feathers, more like little spikes, il try and get a better pic later to show what I mean, when I check to see if shes feeding him/her.

They don't usually feed for the first 10/12 hours, the chick has had its own food supply in the egg sack.

I read they could last a little after hatching, 10-12 hours is safe? Do you think leave them to it, and if still empty in the morning then step in? We're both first timer's(me and dora) so thanks for all your advice

I think you could do more harm than good intervening at this early stage, if it were me i would leave the hen to it and re check in the morning. Don't forget to provide them with a night light now, its vital that if the hen leaves the nest box during the night she can see her way back to the box to feed them.

Thanks il take your advice and leave well alone then, I was going to leave a light on but would that disturb them sleeping, do I need a lamp rather then leaving the light on . Thanks alot for getting back to me so quick.

A lamp is fine, just enough for her to see her way back, if you cover them leave the front of the cover up, when the baby starts to cheep she will feed him, and your welcome

So again iv just fed him, not sure if im doing the right thing as mother wont learn if I take over but just dont want to lose this little guy, im leaving him 4 hours now, but spose to be fed every 2, giving his mum a chance, I will look again about 11 tomoz so she has more of a chance and chick 2 should be appearing, as I said before any advice welcome.

I was wandering how things were going, you must have posted after i logged off yesterday . The thing is if the hen was giving the first crop milk you may not have seen it as a full crop which is usually the first thing they give. Are you providing moist soft food for the parents?, im sure you must be so if she continues not to feed im afraid you are going to have to step in and hand feed. You may find once the second egg hatches it will kick start her. How old are the parent birds?
