blue48 , that's so strange - I tried Willow with red pepper again yesterday and apart from fruit (which I've had no success with) it seems to be one of the only things he doesn't like! I think it might have something to do with the colour - he seems wary of any fresh food which isn't green Glad your millet grass is a hit. I haven't tried Willow with it yet as I wanted it to get a bit bigger first. I was aiming for the original pic from jellybean but I'm still a long way off! It came through a bit sparsely so I have added new millet to the pot which is now starting to come through. I should start another, more densely sown tub though as I think that would help the seedlings to stand up and support each other a bit better as they grow, if you know what I mean.

willowsmum , this is a new one I started yesterday, this will let you see how it looks from the start. The first picture is millet grass. Second picture is my wheatgrass, I'm waiting a few days more for it to sprout before planting

jellybean that's really helpful, thanks. I'm going to go for a more dense sow of millet as you show. Can I ask where you got the wheatgrass from? It would be good to give that a go too. The 'weed seeds' I planted are doing well and now have 3 or 4 different types of seedlings growing - no idea which ones they are yet!

This is my red millet sprouting, how long does it have to be before I cut some for Charlie?

I'd give that now. My two boys seem to like the younger shoots.

As well as the millet grass I've now got two pots of various seeds that he leaves in his feeder. Rather than throw them away I planted them. The first lot came up and he likes it so I'm on to the second.

Good idea blue I will try the same. Charlie loves his tonic seed but does sort it out and leaves certain seeds......I am on the case now and will get planting too π

He seems to enjoy chewing it up and then dropping it in the floor. I hope he gets some nutrients out of it. I tell Loki, my conure, that this is why he and his like are so important to the rainforests, etc. If the birds didn't drop more than half they tried to eat, nothing would ever get moved around and propagated. If the budgies ate all the seed on a seed head then there would be none left for the grasses to replenish themselves. I have grasses come up in quite a number of my ordinary plant pots. Looks scrappy, but I don't really mind and even if I don't get enough seed heads for a feed, it is still lovely to see them munching a bit of home-grown.

I have to admit my millet grass was indeed an abysmal failure. I did get a few blades that Buddy chomped on. I found this grass kit on Amazon. Its for cats but the grass seeds are wheat, oats, rye, barley and flax. That seemed good for the birdies so I thought I'd give it a try. It grew up fast - the picture is a week after I planted them. If you enlarge the picture you can see that many of the seeds didn't sprout but maybe that's planned for. The boys' playgym is across from their cage so I thought I'd put it there to see if I can entice them to come over.

tweetiepiesmom the grass looks great, I bet the boys will be over like a shot! I seem to have ended up with a little snack bar for Willow. Bottom left is the millet grass grown from the spray millet as jellybean recommended, top left is a pot of spray millet with a few lettuce seedlings, top right is Haith's Easisoak seed which I thought I would try planting (as you can see it's gone crazy - I think it's the black rape which came through first), middle right is the pot of weed seeds (I can see vetch but I'm not sure what the others are yet) and bottom right is a mix of canary seed and mixed millet which I thought I would try planting. They're doing well in front of a sunny window and Willow loves everything he's tried so far. Success!

It looks like you have a green thumb for budgie treats willowsmum! Hope Willow continues to enjoy the home grown treats.
