Its been three days that I've had ACV in their water. I put 2 drops in 100 ml. I did taste it and it has a very light vinegar taste, not much. Today I saw Buddy go over to take a drink. I just sat laughing at him. He took three sips and then sat on the perch working his beak up and down. Then he went over to eat some seeds and is now chewing on some basil. Maybe he didn't like it? I haven't noticed Tweetie Pie (who's the one I want to drink) sipping any. On a positive note, Tweetie Pie does seem more active today. Looking at him closely, I can see many pin feathers down his neck.

Poor little guy! I think as Hezz says, he's learning regurgitating. Most of the time less than 5 seeds come up. The other day he sat on his perch regurgitating many seeds. They look undigested and I can hear the "ping" as they hit the bottom of the cage. Afterwards he looked miserable (or is it me thinking he must be miserable?). He sat for a few minutes and then went to eat more.

How often and how much do your budgies regurgitate? There is an occasional day when Tweetie Pie does not regurgitate. Most days he regurgitates 2-3 times with about 5-6 seeds. Then about every 2 or three days he'll regurgitate a lot, maybe 20 or so seeds. When he finishes, he'll go eat more seeds. He looks so pathetic when he does it, like it is not something he can control. I don't think he's sick (?) because sometimes Buddy will come over to him and eat the seeds. If it were an infection, wouldn't Buddy be sick also by now? I haven't seen Buddy regurgitate, he's about 3 months younger than Tweetie Pie. I have been giving them the ACV for a week - 2 drops in 100ml water. What do you know or have experienced with your budgies?

They are all different. Some will frequently, others never do. It is an individual thing and depends on the bird's character. He shouldn't look like he is suffering while he is doing so, though.

Maybe its just me - I think he looks "startled" and not normal when he regurgitates a lot of seeds. A couple of times it happened after their bedtime. I heard the seeds hitting the cage bottom and went to look. Tweetie Pie had moved to a lower perch and was perched there regurgitating. If its just the 5-6 seeds, he does it and then gets on with playing after he goes to eat some seeds. It just seems to happen randomly, not necessarily after he eats or been flirting with Buddy.
He is sleeping more but he's got a lot of pin feathers on his neck and lower head. Also Buddy has been disturbing his sleep. Lately about an hour after I cover them for the night, Buddy starts chirping and singing. I peeked in and Tweetie Pie had come down off his sleeping perch.

TPM i know this sounds a bit gross but is there any smell to the seeds that he is bringing up, could you maybe collect some in some kitchen paper to check. Also, can you see any swelling at all around his crop.

Thanks skysmum. I had to put my finger up and wave at them so they'd get skinny enough for me to compare the two. Both birds look the same. Tweetie Pie has a good throat definition. I'll see what I can do about collecting the regurgitated seeds for a sniff test. I'll take another throat look tomorrow just to be sure.

He took a sip of the water with the ACV!!! I just had to share. It was so funny. He went over, took a sip and then proceeded to wipe his beak on the perch. I so seldom see Tweetie Pie drink! I compared the two guys' throat area again and they both look the same in regards to size. Maybe the regurgitating is just normal for him and maybe it will settle down as he matures.

Hezz and Marianne Marlow I contacted my avian vet about Tweetie Pie and described what was going on with Tweetie Pie. She said she didn't need to see him and sent me this reply which confirms what you said, "Yes, your little guy is mature and feeling hormonal. He’s not old enough for breeding, but he’s old enough to want to breed, he just isn’t mature enough. You can try watching to see if this is a response to a specific toy, a mirror or even a favorite perch. Or maybe he does it when he sees you. Sometimes there is no obvious trigger. If he is a bird you handle, then limit contact to head scratches to avoid triggering his hormones. Otherwise, don’t worry about it. A lot of birds do this, and usually it is intermittent. The main concern if he starts doing it all the time, obsessively, is loss of nutrients. He will definitely eat more if he regurgitates a lot."

I have been adding the ACV to the water everyday. Watching Tweetie Pie, I do think he is vomiting not regurgitating. Sometimes he'll be sitting on his perch quietly and 3-4 seeds will escape from his beak. Less frequently, not even once a day, he'll vomit more seeds while shaking his head. The seeds are wet but there's not a lot of liquid with them. According to the vet source, whole seeds would be coming from his crop indicting a bacterial infection. If the vomit is more wet and seeds look more digested, they are probably coming from his GI tract indicating a yeast infection. The vet said a fecal smear will show if its yeast and a crop swab would show if its bacterial. Other than the vomiting, he seems fine. He's eating well and a variety of foods. When he vomits, he goes to his food dish to eat more seeds. He's playing with Buddy and flying around. I have the vet visit scheduled for Dec 2.

Okay, now things make a little more sense, regarding your posts on that other thread. The vet source was this online discussion that you mentioned? A proper vet consult will be of more benefit for you both; pity it isn't for another two or so weeks.

The "Ask the Vet" session was posted on YouTube. If anyone's interested, here's the ink:
He answered my question about 26 minutes into the session.
Today Tweetie Pie is acting very normal. He's been flying around, playing with his toys, chatting beak to beak with Buddy and beaking him. If I didn't see the seeds slip out his beak, I'd never know anything was wrong.

tweetiepiesmom - thanks for the link! I’ll check it out when my internet connection is strong enough. I usually have a hard time getting videos to load where I live.

Whatever Tweetie Pie has I think Buddy now has as well. Today I noticed he was moving his head up and down and 3-4 seeds were coming out. I haven't seen Tweetie Pie do the violent "coughing" up of many seeds while shaking his head in about 4 days and I haven't seen Buddy do that. Tweetie Pie continues to have 3-4 seeds slip out his beak when he's just perching from time to time. I'm still adding ACV to their water every day. What they are coughing up are seeds, hard and round so I think its coming from their crop. I'll call the vet on Monday and see if I need to bring in both budgies. Since they now both have the same symptoms, maybe the treatment will be the same for both.
