…managed to break my foot without even falling over anything! I got up just as any normal day and for some reason one foot was dead. I usually walk like a astronaut when that happens or drag it along and feeling returns very quickly. Not today. I stood up from the bed and crashed to the floor as my foot just gave. I think I was a bit shocked and half asleep as I immediately stood and crashed down again. Third time lucky, I made it to the bathroom. I acknowledged it was sore and thought it would bruise but mainly disregarded it but it slowed me down considerably and the pain worsened. I took a better look and there was a fair amount of swelling, but with animals to be seen to, I carried on a little more slowly again as the pain was getting pretty bad. Once done I looked at the breakfast dishes on the drainer, knew I couldn’t stay on my feet any longer and sat down, whereupon I noticed the foot was MUCH more swollen. So I visited Dr Google for soft tissue injuries but a photo caught my eye as the swelling was in exactly the same place as mine and it was of a fractured 5th metatarsal, so I googled that and every symptom got a tick! Not being able to leave my son with autism alone or drive myself to urgent care as recommended by 111 online, hubby and daughter had to come home from work, one to be at home with my son and the dogs and the other to drive me to the hospital. I didn’t have to wait too long for triage and about 15 mins for examination and then was told it definitely looked like a 5th metatarsal fracture so I’d need an X-ray but the X-ray machine was having a service and a part had been ordered and could I return tomorrow please. What were the chances?! I phoned the nearest large hospital but their wait time was 3hours+ and there were 2 major incidents on the motorway (which are still ongoing) so back tomorrow it is although I’ll phone ahead to check the X-ray machine is fully functional and in use first. so, how was everyone else’s day?

Omg you poor thing. It must be so painful. Which part of the foot is that, can you move your toes? I imagine they’ll give you a shoe boot. Wish I’d gone with my toe. My amateur taping clearly didn’t do enough.
Also remember to keep it up and think they say ice,?

Whew, what a way to start the day! Unfortunately I'm like you. When I injure something, I just keep going until the pain stops me! I hope tomorrow the roads are clear, the X-ray machine fixed and you get it mended quickly. I can say take it easy today but I well know that what's got to be done around the house just has to be done! I do hope you manage well and the pain isn't driving you crazy.

Thanks both. The pain was pretty intense earlier, when I started to think enough was enough after doing the animals. It’s the bone that runs along the outside of the foot from pinky toe up towards the larger bones near the ankle. After I’d stopped and sat down for a bit, getting back up was so bad I wasn’t sure I could put any weight on it at all but I made myself as I knew I’d have to walk to the car and from the car into the urgent care unit, etc. Apparently it’s the most common broken bone in the foot and affects sportspeople a lot, such as footballers, kick boxers, etc. It’s also easily broken from falling when standing and if the heel and ankle flex as you go down, a little bit of bone can be ripped off by the ligament. Sounds horrific! I asked about a boot and the nurse told me she definitely wouldn’t put one on today because they’re single use only and cost the NHS money so unless it’s a bigger break they could just treat it with elevation, rest, ice and painkillers for a hairline fracture, so the decision will be made on the X-ray results. I can move my toes a little. That was the first thing I did this morning and so dismissed it as anything more than a knock as I could wiggle them. As the swelling started however I found I couldn’t bend my toes. Apparently I need to keep moving my foot while it’s elevated and make sure I stand up and weight bear on it every hour. Also, I got told off for having sandals on. I told her I couldn’t fit in anything else - not my pumps or slip on garden shoes and so it was sandals or slippers. When she first saw it she exclaimed at the swelling and redness but then exclaimed at how swollen it was when she did the examination, but still proceeded to tell me off for wearing a pair of sandals. She told me to use a stick on the other side to the bad foot, which makes sense as I’ve been walking along holding onto things on the opposite side as I go, but she didn’t offer a crutch. The good news is that hubby and daughter are on annual leave next week so can help me out and I can rest up more, but it’s our silver wedding at the end of the month and a family BBQ planned - just us, kids and kids’ partners. I bought a lovely pair of silver shoes back in January in the sales. Told my daughter come hell or high water, those shoes will be worn, even if I have to settle myself first and then they bring the shoes out and I can wear one and dangle the other off my toes or balance it on my moon boot if I end up with one.

ariella Oh no! What a rubbish thing to happen. It's not just you though - I yawned last week while my daughter was reading me a book at bedtime and dislocated my jaw. Cue 4 hour trip to a&e to get it relocated! A broken foot sounds significantly more painful and inconvenient. I hope its not too bad and that you are able to get it all sorted tomorrow.

Poor you!! It must have been so painful..
My mom does the same.. Moms learn to ignore themselves for kids and pets.. she ignores everything till it gets worse & never tells over a phone call too.. whenever we are around, we have to drag her to the clinic.. please don't do that in future.. I'm sure you would have already got this advice from your kids too.. 🧡
Please take good care of yourself 🧡

Poor you. I fell over at the airport going to lanzarote, I was shaken but I thought I had strained my shoulder. I went to first air as I had cut my knee and hands, they had no plasters so had to use my own, had no sling so had to use my scarf, then went for a hot drink and flew to Lanzarote. Luckily we were staying at friends, so at night went to the bar and had a few drinks. It was really painful but carried on. Well my husband proceeded to get very drunk whilst I sat up all night crying in pain!!! Anyway next morning we decided I needed a doctor, he told me go the hospital, 5 hours later on my own in triage, no one allowed in with me, the doctor didn't speak English we had to use Iphone translater and found I had broken my should joint in 3 places. The gave me the best pain killers ever and told me to go the out hospital as soon as I got home 3 days later. They gave me a sling. I had never broken anything before so just thought I had sprained it. Well 2 years of physio and I am fine, thank goodness I didn't go the hospital physio because they said I would get the use back properly, so went private and I have 98% usage which I can live with. Those shoes will look lovely, just sit down all day and showing them off

I am sure that the swelling and worst bit will be much improved by your anniversary and bbq..

I am so much more careful now when I walk about

My sympathies and prayer for quick recovery.Falling is the last thing which should happen. appears something innocuous all you do is stand up again. Not at all. After a certain age you dont get up at all but have to be picked up. Then you find that you have a hip fracture folloed by surgery and implant of a steel ball. Its not over yet.Dr Google says that if you survive the first year without complications you will survive. I did, fortunately none. At the time my wife was in hospital with life threatening Dengue and my daughter tending her. I had fallen at home alone. After my daughters frantic unanswwered calls a neighbour was contacted who peeped in the windows and found me lying on the floor!! It took a month to begin driving again and an year to walk normally.
A year later my wife fell and broke her hip. then a clot developed after surgery and life threateningpulmonary embolism. Fortunately she survived and is now making a fast recovery strolling at home.
lesson - never ever fall.

What awful experiences you have all had.
I, fingers crossed, have never had an accident. I have had two hospital admissions, one to give birth in 2019 and had to stay in 8 days, another for 7 days due to my lungs back in 2011.
I have had teeth out and other procedures, but I have been quite lucky I suppose!

Oh that sounds absolutely awful! A 4 hour trip too for good measure. I had TMJ earlier this year and it was very painful, but apparently another symptom of menopause as I was unknowingly clenching my teeth at night. It took weeks to pass, so I empathise completely with how horrid it must have been to dislocate your jaw. Does it still hurt now?

ooh didn't know that. if it were to happen again, you can get a mouth guard, so that the clenching cannot happen
