Update……He still isn’t doing well at all. He has been on antibiotics and Metacam since last Friday. He is eating normally and talking a little bit, and comes out to sit with me…..but he has no energy at all. He also sounds slightly wheezy…….I worry about him all the time and you all know there is little else I can do for him. I just hope he starts to pick up again……..Little the vet can do for him as I have said……..😢

Poor Charlie 😔
So hard for you, Ladybird to feel like you can do nothing but you're doing a lot and all you can for your beloved friend.

How many days has Charlie been on ABs this time?

5 days…. Have just given him both. I think I should do the seven days. Nothing wrong with his BITE! But he is now sitting with me bless him…

We are all cheering you on, both you and Charlie.
I wonder if there is a nurse or other medical professional among our group here that could tell you something about how long AB's are used in people and if they are given off and on so you have something to use to guide your treatment of Charlie. I know its not the same thing but little pieces of information gathered here and there can help.

But he is now sitting with me bless him… Another two days of ABs seems sensible to me, Ladybird, especially if you're giving Charlie metacam at the same time. At least after 7 days, you'll be fairly certain that ABs aren't achieving much (or Charlie will start feeling better, if they are). Fingers very much crossed.

I wonder if there is a nurse or other medical professional among our group here that could tell you something about how long AB's are used in people and if they are given off and on so you have something to use to guide your treatment of Charlie. I know its not the same thing but little pieces of information gathered here and there can help. Different antibiotics have differing dosage timeframes and different bacteria require their own standard treatment. Sometimes even the site of infection can play a part in dosage strength and length of time. There is no one size fits all. Then there is the difference that occurs with the same drug being given to other species. Some drugs can be given to dogs but not to cats for instance. I’m not a health professional any more, but I would seriously advise ladybird to follow the directions given by Charlie’s vet only, a true professional who has actually examined the patient. Regardless of the fact that she wasn’t able to give a diagnosis for Charlie’s condition, she certainly knows a lot better than any of us. I know that isn’t what you are suggesting but felt I have to put that out there for future reference. A good point though, about the AB’s on and off … long term health risks, efficiency of using them this way, possible opening the door to a reduced immune system, also possible resistance building in some bugs. There are a lot of things to be considered.

Thank you everyone……..I absolutely understand what Hezz is saying but with Charlie it’s not really straightforward . He has been on antibiotics on and off since April……… Firstly for two weeks…then he had a full month on them… He then seemed Ok for a while. The vet as you know is pretty sure he has borno and the only treatment is to give them intermittent antibiotics. It won’t cure it just dampens down the symptoms, until .it won’t anymore I suppose. So I am guessing really but it’s comforting for me to have the help that I get from all you lovely people…..xxxxx

It's very tricky. You have already seen the vet many times with Charlie and she has given her advice, which you have taken.
We can only hope that Charlie will live and enjoy life for a bit longer.
You're doing your best for him.

I am so sorry that Charlie caught this whether borno or whatever. It seems his care requires the patience and good judgement that your are demonstrating. I hope he has many, many more golden moments with you.
