Poor dog just can't take a trick. He is in hospital at the moment having picked up a paralysis tick sometime over the last couple of days. My son and I came home yesterday to find him weak in the back legs. He has not had much appetite the last day or two but that can just be Mac, and odd bouts of vomiting, which we put down to the sea-water as we took him to the beach again on Sunday. So he is in hospital chewing holes big-time into my credit card, we should be able to bring him home this afternoon, with a great long list of care and dietary requirements while he recovers fully.

Oh no. Ka-ching! Those ticks are awful. Is there any way to protect them, or do you still have to keep checking them over all the time?

Update: Not allowed home tonight. He's still weak and very wobbly in the hindquarters. Has had water only so far. Stace: There are on-going treatments to give which also cost an arm and a leg every two weeks, but that is really the only alternative to checking them over every day. I had been checking him but obviously missed this little b**@#&!!! But he is out of the woods, just need him to recover some more. Nani: He is around 18 months - a rescue dog we have had about 6 months. He's on this thread: budgerigarsforum.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=otherbirds&action=display&thread=2064

Oh god Hezz so sorry to hear about your little Mac - you can only check as much as you can and you know that there will always be one that tuns up in the most hidden place. You can get 99.9% of them but you know there will always be one. Don't beat yourself up about it tho, he is getting the best care Hope he recovers real soon poor little fella x

Thanks Sam. We will be able to bring him home this afternoon, but he has to be kept quiet for up to two weeks! These things are such killers, but usually the larger dogs recover completely with no on-going affects. Hope this is the case for Mac. At least he is eating, and keeping it down now. Will update when I can.

Update: The Mac-dog is home. Just. He can barely stand, and only for a minute or two. He is so much worse than I thought he would be - so much worse than he was when we took him to the vets. He ate two little dog biscuits out of my hand, just to please me, I think. And a tiny slurp of water. It is just cracking me up, seeing him so low. But he is home, and he is on the mend.

It is sort of like a snake-bite, Mick - a neurotoxin. But unlike a snake which just bites and goes, these, being ticks, keep injecting the poison all the time they are feeding. So the dog just gradually gets sicker and sicker and will eventually die without treatment. So the treatment is like an antivenom/antivenene which ever terminology people are used to. It is very hard on their whole breathing ability and also their heart. Dogs with dicky hearts often don't make it.

Since we brought him home yesterday to tonight, a bit over 24 hours, he has eaten two hand-fulls of biscuits, and drunk about two cups of water. But a little walk just now for a wee showed a little of the Mac-life we are used to seeing. He didn't immediately want to lie back down in his kennel, but chose a small detour - a very good sign. Mind you, I doubt he would have eaten or drunk anything if I haven't been enticing him/bullying him into having a bit of both. He is back to being quite skinny again, so quickly. I can see how slow this is going to be ............ just couldn't believe how much he had gone downhill since we left him at the vet's Tuesday pm. Sorry Mick, nearly missed this: There are sprays, and treatments, some are incorporated with flea and other tick treatments, like baths and something that is a bit like spot-on for the birds. We will be using a combination of these to ensure we and Mac don't go through this again. Unfortunately, for us and Mac, things had changed rather since I last had a dog, six years, and they have become much more prevalent here in the suburbs - before it used to be more rural areas - and he could have picked up the damned thing in our own yard. Live and learn - a very hard lesson!

Oh god Hezz, i dont know how i missed this one. Poor Mac he doesn't have much luck does he. These things sound evil, im glad we dont have them here. We use Advocate once a month on Tilly which is an all round killer of most of the nasties but this sounds a whole different kettle of fish. I hope he continues to improve, he's young which is on his side. Keep us posted.
