Hezzi put dishes of water on my radiator too. I cover it with a metal colander so that a budgie can't fall in Looks classy! That's a great idea ........ one of those metal veggie steamers would be good too. And who cares about class? When you have budgies ruling the house it ceases to become a thing of great beauty .......... "Home Beautiful" won't be knocking at the door pleading to be let in any time soon. Not at my door anyway!

Just returned from the vets who has given Elf a treatment of spot on-i now have to apply 2 more drops in 2 weeks time then 4 weeks....Reallty not looking forward to doing it -the vets make it look SOOOOOOO easy although Elf did escape from the vets hands ha ha and had a good old fly around and had to be brought back down by a net He also said if after treatment his feathers have not improved then i should take him back....

Oh, good old Elfie. Give the vet a run (fly?) for his money! I would still keep up the water around the room, too, Moogie. Even if it turns out to be mites (somehow), it has to be better for him than allow him to be too dry.

They do love to escape the vets hands don't they One of mine did that last time, can't remember who though! Luckily the surroundings were unfamiliar to the budgie so he just landed on one of us. Hope Elf's feather condition improves.

Forgot to ask-how long after the spot on is applied can Elf be misted or have a bath? I know for dogs they cant get wet for 48 hours so wondered if buds have a similar time scale??

Don't know the answer to that one, Moogie, and never thought of it. A very good question - if anyone has the answer to it, I would be interested to know as well.

i Just read that if you hold buds wings up to the light you will be able to see feather mites as little black dots so with this i got little Elf (yes i actusally managed to hold him with out to much fuss) opened out his wings and could see a small amount of black dots so i do now asume he does have the nasty little mites YUK!!!! so he has two more tratments to go,one on wednesday and then a month from that....After that do i wait 6 months and then treat him every 6 months? Horrid little things arnt they!!.....

Oh yuk! Good that you have confirmed that Elf is carrying the little pests. A good tip too. I hope he is back to his handsome, healthy self soon.

It could have been something like having him outside for a bit of sunshine, Moogie. A friend of mine had to move a wee sunbirds' nest a while back, and she said she was covered with mites when she went back inside. So Elfie probably just got unlucky! But back to your question, yes, 6 months from his last treatment. The timing doesn't have to be spot on down to the correct day - remember that that treatment will be a preventative, rather than trying to cure him, which is what you are doing now. I am just so glad that you now have a reason for Elfie's scruff-bag look ........ things can be hard to treat if you don't know the cause.

It looks like he is barbering to me. I have an African Grey who looks just the same. He has been clipping bits off his feathers (barbering) for years, he also plucks. Here is a picture of a barbering bird.
