:' :)Hi Guys, Bob laid an egg on sunday, sadly it broke, as I had taken the nest box away after the last clutch were all lost, and on the great advice I got from some very helpful people on here , I was hoping there would not be any more mating, as there was no box, but love has overcome all my efforts to try and make them wait . They are mating in the cage, in the tree, even while I'm making a cup of tea . I have given in and put the nestbox back, and she laid another egg on tuesday, that also got broken, I could'nt understand why, today she has laid another, and I am sure I know what is happening, Bluey goes in the box, and scatches around in there, I'm not sure why, it's definately Bluey, as I had a peek in, so I think he is breaking them by accident when he's scratching around , What I would like to know please, is if I can stop this or not, if so how. He is doing a great job feeding Bob, and keeping guard, and Bob is sitting on the egg almost 24/7, so all is great, apart from Bluey scratching around and breaking the eggs . Please could someone help, I would be very grateful. bizzly Attachments:

If you are sure that the cock is breaking the eggs, then the only option would be to remove him from the breeding cage.
Can you put the link to your previous thread here?

Firstly, thank you, I thought that would be the reply, it's definately Bluey, he gets in the box and scratches away, if there is an egg or not, he does it, so he is not doing it to break the egg, but obviously the eggs is getting broken in the process. We only have one cage, as they are pets, rather than for breeding, so not sure how to sort this out . Its a large cage, they are never shut in, and have free run or flight of the living room and kitchen. They have a tree in the living room, so perhaps Bluey could stay there, do you think that would be ok, they used to sleep in it all the time. How would Bob get food without Bluey, sorry for going on, when I think Im finished, I think of something else to ask. Secondly, I dont know how to put a link to the previous threads, sorry

Yes he would be OK on the tree but the cage should be next to it. The purpose is not to separate them but to stop Bluey from entering the next box.
The hen can feed herself. Just put some millet spray in the nest box. The rest she will eat when she will come out for water and poop. I have had hens which fed themselves and chicks without the cocks.

Glad BB was able to help you, bizzly. I know nothing about breeding budgies, but I wondered if there was enough nesting material to cushion the egg, especially with one or both of the adults in the box?

The last time Bob laid, there was no nesting material, as I had looked on Google for advice, and have to say its very confusing, and conflicting advice, some say dont use it some say do, anyway, so last time no, this time yes, I have put some sawbust in there. I didnt realise till this time why the egigs were getting broken, but I remember Bluey going in and scratching around in there then, this time I have seem him, Im sure this is whats happening. The advice is keep him out . Bob is due to lay another egg tomorrow, so I have to set a plan today lol, to sort it out. The nest box is just a normal one top flips up, hole in front, and a small perch by the hole, the reason Im explaining it is I dont have a pic of it, but will try and do that today, if I can, not to good at that sort of thing . So thank you for all the advice, any more will also be gratefully accepted. Bob, Bluey, bizzly

The nest box looks fine and it should be OK if there is concave in it. Without a concave, eggs roll in the next box which can result in broken eggs.
If Bob is going to lay, she will do so even if Bluey is not in the same cage, so no need to worry.

Im Sorry, I didnt explain myself very well, the box in on top of the cage. Ill start again, please bear with me, as I am very gratefull for your help. And as you may have guessed new to all this. There is one large cage, door always open, the nest box is on top of the cage, so that is how they get in and out of it. at the moment Bluey just lands on the cage and goes straight in the box. Of course I can move it if you think this is wise, and wont upset Bob to much. I hope I have explained a bit better this time, , and once again thank you, you help is very much appreciated. Bob, Bluey, bizzly

So the nest box is on top of the cage and cannot be accessed from inside the cage.
So keeping in mind your cage setup, the only option would be to put Bluey in the cage and close the door and keep him there until Bob is finished with the clutch.
You can also move the nest box to inside the cage so the Bob has privacy behind close door and Bluey can stay outside on the tree. But moving a nest box with eggs is not advisable as most hens will abandon the nest box and eggs.

ok thank you for your patience and understanding. As yet no eggs in box, if all goes to plan Bob will lay again tomorrow, so will it be ok to move the nest box now, ready for tomorrow. To be honest Im not worried if she doesnt lay, as long as she is ok. All I want is for them to be happy. Im grateful to you, you have been a great help to me

If Bob lays tomorrow, you can close the door and Bluey can stay outside.
