Ever since I have had Ruby she has suffered from sore feet.....they get a bit red on the underside and this causes her to hold them up. They have natural branches and they are all different sizes so the budgies get to exercise their feet but for some unknown reason Ruby always suffers with her feet. None of the other budgies have this problem and I was wondering if she has thinner skin on the bottom of her feet and that's what is causing them to get sore....her skin is really light in colour unlike the other birds. Does anyone have any tips or advice as to what, if anything I can do to help her. Is there anything I can put on to her feet to maybe toughen the skin up a bit...iodine solution? She is a good eater and isn't unwell at all but at least once a week she shows signs of her feet being uncomfortable. I have had a good look at her feet and they just appear red and sore. All help and advice greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi H2O Only thing I can suggest is to separate off to a smaller cage with softer perches whilst she recovers. You can wrap soft material around her perches (as long as it it not something that her claws can get caught in) As birds are on their feet ALL the time they dont have chance to heal despite the variance in perch thickness. Is she hand tame? If so are you able to apply Savlon to your finger and get her to step up? That may also help with the healing process and keep out infection I Hope that helps!

Also, take a look here as Shirls has been having issues with her budgie Harvey that has the early stages of bumblefoot. Do you have any pictures of Harvey's cage and perches Shirls?

Unfortunately she isn't hand tame but I can hold her with a soft glove and apply cream etc...is Savlon safe for budgies...what if they eat some? Does Iodine solution help at all. Thanks

Savlon is ok for birds, just apply a thin layer (in other words dont smother it on) or alternatively you can apply a savlon spray Not sure about iodine but other members may have had experience with this. You are welcome!

You are welcome! How often should I apply the Savlon? As it doesn't sound like bumblefoot I would recommend daily and keep monitoring her but it wouldn't hurt to apply twice a day...if she'll let you that is! I know how bitey hens can be lol! Best of luck and let us know how you both get on

Betadine Dry Powder Spray....This is the stuff we use on our Tortoise when she pulls a toe nail out...see link LINK: myfootcaresupplies.com/creams-and-sprays/69-betadine-dry-powder-spray.htmlOur vet recommended it to us to soothe and help fight infection...just wondered if anyone has used it on Budgies. I know our vet has given us Iodine liquid to use on our budgies when they have any small injuries, so maybe the dry spray powder does the same.

Well I am no vet that's for sure! However you could phone your vet and ask for advice if that betadine spray would be suitable to use on budgies feet as well? I am sure he wouldn't mind giving that advice out for free and then you wouldn't have to pay a consultation fee

The perches are willow branches.

Sorry that post was meant for Shirls as she has covered her perches with cotton cloth

Savlon or Sudocreme are both budgie safe. I think if her feet are naturally softer and more inclined towards irritation, then there is not a lot you can do to toughen them up, unfortunately. How long have you had Ruby, H2O?
