I have been pondering over the pet shop budgie and here is what I think.......it obviously has to come from a breeder first, who has looked after it really well, giving it all the best seed and fruit and veggie's etc, it is then sold to the pet shop,or he would be over run, and immediately becomes a commodity, an item to sell and make money, seed and water is given by the pet shop owner and that's it's lot, so the quicker the BUDGIE LOVER...."you" comes along and buy's it, and get it off "their hands" the better, the commodity now reverts back to a budgie with love and all that goes' with it..........

I often wonder why most pet shops don't even provide the budgie with some simple toys.
They don't cost much and are easy to wash.

What do you suggest we do about all of the pet shop birds that aren't getting enough love?

I love that way of thinking Brian I could not find a breeder that had babys at the time i wanted one so i went to the heathrow bird centre and bought my little Elfie,i had read a lot before about the pros of buying from a breeder and cons of getting from a store and it did concern me but not enough to put me off getting my Budgie as i fell in love with him the moment i saw him ,he was in a well kept clean enviroment with all the birds looking healthy and although the taming may have taken some time longer than if i had of got from a breeder it is all worth it as i have ended up with a friendly, loving funny clever little Birdie that i love more and more...I do agree though toys in the cages would be great for them...

Before I got Jerry I went to two different Pet shops and both had birds in appalling conditions.
With one of them they had overgrown beaks and the other most of the birds had scaly face. I pointed it out to the shop owner but I doubt they did anything about it.

That is horrible, that would be a case fore rspca wouldnt it? i mean its neglect!!! the more people complain about these kind of situations the more can be done...A horrid pet shop by me has finally been closed due to the conditions and treatment of the animals,it took a while but it happened in the end due to peoples complaints...

I am not sure that the RSPCA do that much to be honest. We have complained to them several times and they promised to provide follow ups but never did.
Good fer you.
What happened to the animals?

Actually I totally understand what you mean about the rspca, the amount of stray dogs i have picked up and i have had to hold on to until the owner calls (rspca) phone line and then be diverted to my address plus they were called many times to this shop and said they could not find proper evidence ect but eventually they either did or they just got fed u with all the complaints..Sadly i am not sure what happend to all the animals too sad

What do you suggest we do about all of the pet shop birds that aren't getting enough love? You should organize a pet shop patrol Marianne with a new pet shop patrol in your area, "thread".......lol

This is something that i have always had a problem with. The pet shop that i got my sky from is a strange mix. He has all sorts of birds, in the centre of the room where he has a large table and they are free to wander around on various stands and branches, they also have toys to play with. These birds are hand tame AND have had their wings clipped the rest of the stock are crammed into small cages around the room, I've counted up to ten in one cage with nothing to do, they just jump from one perch to another. Having said that she was always healthy and lived until she was 12. George however came from a breeder where they were very well looked after and he died aged just 7. I would love to increase my birds again and introduce new stock to do so, i love it, but unless i get a bigger aviary i wouldn't do it. People have said i should breed and sell but i couldn't part with my babies for fear of what would happen to them .

Yes Skysmum. Every pet shop that I have been in they have just had a couple of perches where all they could do was hop back and forth all day. It's any wonder that they don't all go mental. Imagine living in a room with just two chairs in it, one at either end. An overcrowded room at that.
