People have tried for many years to improve the condition of pet stores. Mostly for the benefit or cats and dogs, rather than birds though. I really don't like going in to them. I just feel sorry for the fate the animals might meet. So many people just don't realise the responsibility involved in keeping a pet, and caring for it in a holistic way - both its physical and emotional wellbeing and needs.
And then there are those who supply the stores, motivated only by the profit. That's how we get those horrid puppy factories.
I think that we, as humans, don't realise that animals think and feel in a very similar way to us. Just they are not as smart.
Even though I am not vegetarian, I wonder sometimes at some point in the future we'll look back at the way we farm and consume other creatures and think how barbaric we were. After all, the same has happened in so many other aspects of our lives and our societies.
Excellent post Stace, just my thoughts entirely, but I don't agree with the bit marked in red.........
I think backyard breeders will always exist, not buying from pet shops would send them underground to sell and that would be terrible, much worse than pet shops, I think the way to go is to visit as many pet shops as possible and make notes/report them And praise those that are good, they are not all bad, mine go to a garden center in Nottingham and is super clean, birds are kept in a really good clean environment..........but no toys and still a commodity
If only all those who raise and keep animals had the same feelings as you, Brian, and the others on this forum. The world would be a better place.
I was just thinking, as I read this of the first song I ever remember singing when I was a small child:
All things bright and beautiful, All creatures great and small, All things wise and wonderful, The Lord God made them all.
Each little flower that opens, Each little bird that sings, He made their glowing colours, He made their tiny wings.
We have a responsibility to care for those who are weaker, smaller or less able to speak for themselves. Forget any religious aspect. It's just the right thing to do, be it the old and frail or the animals with whom we share this space.
We don't have to give much up to do it either. And, in the end, it's enriching.
I wish more children would be taught songs like this when they are little. It might make them better, kinder and wiser people as they grow.

Thank you for your kind words Stace, I do remember that hymn, and used to sing it at Sunday school, a simple song but with a strong meaning...........love it!!

Thing is Brian. The more we buy from pet shops, the more they will get in to sell, so that wont make any difference. Better to improve the conditions in the pet shops than take them away.
We are not Vets, Avian or otherwise. If you have any serious doubts about your budgies' health an appointment with an Avian vet should always be your first point of call.

I totally agree Marianne, but it is never going to work if we keep putting people off, I don't give a poop about the pet shop or it's owner, we are persecuting the budgie that's in there, the budgies are "from breeders" in the first place..........Do you adopt a child from a posh environment or adopt one from a hell hole and change it's life??? I don't know the answer

King of the Budgie Stud
You have come to the right site. Please make sure to buy from breeder and not pet shop. Best of luck with your budgie search
Just what I did not want to read BB, have you not read Commodity, get these budgies out out out of pet shops...........
I can understand your point Brian. But I am looking at it from a different angle. If people stop buying from pet shops, they will stop keeping budgies in pet shops. I have read and contributed in Commodity thread. Here I always buy from pet shops as we don't have breeders.

Thanks BB, I am not annoyed Just concerned for the poor budgie as it is not it's fault, I suppose in a way it's ours...........
You're welcome Brian I know how you feel. That's why you started this commodity thread. It's not a difference of opinion. Just looking at the same thing from different angles But I agree that it's the budgies who are suffering.
