I think it is always going to be a difficult sbject to discuss for everyone who is so passionate about birds, or any animal come to that. As for me - I am not a breeder and have not had the wealth of experience such as others here on the forum so am not perhaps qualified! But one thing we can all agree on is that we don't like to know that any animal is not getting the best life and conditions it deserves very true Sam good point..........

Trust me guys, you don't want to see pet shops in this part of the world Nice thread Brian. Very touching. That's why I never sell my budgies. They go free to friends and family. But they must buy the cage and seeds and show me first or give me the money to buy the stuff for them. I keep some though Thanks Brian. I have no choice. I cannot sell them to pet shops. I will try to take a picture or two of a local pet shop and you will realize that it will be cruel to sell them the budgies. Here is a picture of a local pet shop. Now you guys will know what I meant.

That is such an upsetting picture, how awful for them...I know we can never stop shops from selling birds but i would like to think maybe we could do something about the way they are being kept and treated....I know people say if you buy from pet shops then they will always stock them to be bought but as i just said they will always have birds foe sale in pet shops anyway so if one bird/budgie can be given a new happy life away from these shops then is that not a good thing!? Not all people know about breeders IE- parent's who's child would like a budgie etc the first place these people think of and go to is their local pet shop...I would love to stop birds being kept like in the picture so maybe as we said before we will all have to put our heads together and come up with something....

I'd want to go and save them all. There are too many budgies in local pet shops. It's not possible. Even if someone does so, they will import more. From time to time, I give them advise and some medicines FOC. Some like it and some get angry and ask me to keep my nose out of their business.

Good thoughts. This maybe possible in the west but not here as there are no such laws to support.

To be quite honest, BB, I thought it could be worse. I'm not saying it is good, but just that I have seen how valuable animals - animals that are worth money to tribespeople - are treated in some parts of the world, and budgies are not a source of income to people with no cash........ pets are not even considered as life is hung so much on the balance, there is no room for something that doesn't bring some reward, doesn't have some currency value.
In parts of Africa while travelling through, I saw people selling baskets - about a metre wide, one third deep - full of dead sunbirds. The same size as our local olive-backed sunbird and they are a tiny creature, about the size of a finch or canary - they make a budgie look big! This was as a food source. People reckon eating quail is like a bag of bones..... after taking off the feathers and the guts (no, they probably didn't do that) there would be very little left, as there is very little to start with! Sorry........ lost on my little rant there, but people in western society forget that the rest of the world isn't so fortunate.
